History of WPCL

The Water Polo Champions League (WPCL) is kicking off its third
season in 2011. WPCL is designed to bring the highest level of
play to the United States and increase the awareness of, and
participation in, water polo.
The United
States has long been plagued with the dilemma that the top
athletes who complete their collegiate play have no
opportunities to continue play in the United States and often
times end up going overseas to continue play. The WPCL
provides an opportunity to those athletes who want to play at a
high level an opportunity to continue to improve their game
domestically. The league includes the top open clubs in the area
to compete against each other for the Champions Cup.
The league
runs from February to April each year and culminates in a
championship event. The winning club will receive a cash prize
plus the right to take the Champions Cup for the year.
The WPCL
was started in 2009 as a way to continue the interest in what
was then the Premier League of USAWP. In the southern
California, the Premier League included both collegiate all
stars with NCAA eligibility and club teams fielding open teams.
While USAWP has ended the Premier league and modified the way
they select their national team pipeline, the clubs wanted to
continue the league play format for men’s open teams. The WPCL
was created to respond to this desire.
